Chapter 1

Taking the first steps to ERP adoption: Making the case for change

At the beginning of this series dedicated to UK Police Forces, we considered some of the aims and ambitions underpinning the National Policing Digital Strategy. Envisaging the ideal service of 2030, it explored ways in which police officers and staff could be enabled through digital technology, ensuring they were equipped with the right knowledge, skills and tools to tackle increasingly complex crimes and provide a seamless citizen experience. It also highlighted the importance of a joined-up, whole-system approach in which the ethical use of data would drive efficiencies while safeguarding public trust.

In designing the strategy, the NPCC acknowledged the challenges ahead, recognising that the ways in which they are met will shape the future of policing in the UK for decades to come. For the police forces to remain effective in the face of changes in society, forces must evolve and adapt accordingly. In order to tackle the rise in online crime, for example, the police must have the appropriate technology supported by skilled staff and proactive partners.

Strategic Policing Partnership Board, Policing Vision 2030:

"We must be able to adapt to the changing nature of crime and will make sure that our service has the right tools to do this." [1]
