What is Enterprise architecture? Essential for successful digital transformation
What does your ideal ICT landscape look like? What do you need to undertake in order to achieve your strategy and objectives? What would happen if your current infrastructure, software and systems were no longer obstacles to your progress? These are the questions that often mark the beginning of the work of an enterprise architect. Peter van Haaften, business development manager at HSO, explains why enterprise architecture is essential in achieving a flexible and future-proof ICT landscape.
Whether you want to increase your customer satisfaction, innovate or be the best employer in the sector, modern technology can contribute immensely in helping you to achieve your goals. However, the ICT landscape often lacks the flexibility to adopt this technology and is therefore unable to change with your strategy. That does not come as a surprise, as it is basically no longer possible to compare the data, software, applications and infrastructure of a few years ago to the current application landscape.
A new application landscape
The 2020 application landscape looks very different from what many companies are used to. Take the ERP system, for instance. The ERP system used to be the big, beating heart of the IT landscape. ERP was home to the majority of the functionalities of your organisation, as well as the key functionalities. Examples include Field Service, CRM and BI. We can now see that various data, functionalities and processes, which used to be in ERP, are now placed in other apps. Take for instance the following example of a malfunctioning air conditioning unit, where the actual purchasing, invoicing and inventory management takes place in the ERP system.
The big advantage of this differentiation is that modern apps are much lighter, more flexible and also often more user-friendly – they are therefore much easier to adapt to future challenges.
The importance of Enterprise Architecture
Optimising your systems now takes more than simply upgrading a few applications. If you want to innovate your current, as-is landscape, you first need an integrated vision on your future software and systems. Our enterprise architects can help you to do this. With your business strategy clearly in mind, we will design a completely new IT landscape for you. We will also restructure all of the data, functionalities and processes. We will take a look at where we can best embed the functionalities and processes in your organisation – and what technology is best suited.
After the analysis and design phase is completed, the definitive building and configuration of the infrastructure, software and applications will begin. We divide up this phase into separate projects. This keeps the projects manageable and comprehensible for our clients. A key part of the project is setting up and configuring the basic technology to which we can then connect the infrastructure, platform, software and applications. That is what we call the cloud foundation. But more about that in the next blog!
“Enterprise architecture is the way to migrate fragmented processes from the past to a sustainable and flexible IT environment that can handle the required changes”.
“As enterprise architects, we often ask our customers to describe their dream. If you are not held back by the obstructions in your current system, what would your ideal IT landscape look like? What do you need to achieve your strategy? By looking at things from a different perspective, we will design the landscape that will make this dream a reality”.
