Andy is a veteran of the technology industry – that doesn’t mean he’s been around the block, just that what he doesn’t know isn’t worth knowing. Andy has worked with some of the largest Public Sector organisations in the UK and on some of the largest and most complex technology projects ever delivered. And has the scars to prove it.

His mantra: focus on people first, and the technology will take care of itself.

What’s your work routine?

Start early, my mind is sharper. Exercise and ponder the topics of my day. I get inspiration whilst exercising. Normally a swim or cycle.

Then coffee and get into the day. I do things that come to me straight away, I prefer to read/action and move on.

What’s one misconception about technology projects you’ve come across?

That technology provides all the answers.

People, they way they react, feel and are treated is so important.

What metrics matter most in a tech project?

That everyone is aiming for the same, consistent goals. Yes things change and flex but all associated teams and individuals need to be tuned into where we are collectively going.

Something you wish you’d known about your work when you first started?

Be honest with yourself. I don’t like playing games and you see it so much.

It was everyday activity in 80s when I started, less so now, or maybe I am wiser to it.

What did your biggest professional failure teach you?

  • Get back up, dust down and look for ways to regain confidence.
  • Trust your network of people and companies to offer help and guidance.
  • Don’t let individuals grind you down, rise above and see the light.

The #1 thing that helps organisations get value from their technology projects?

People.

Your parting piece of advice?

Listen. You don’t always need to be talking to contribute, look for ways to make impact without unnecessary talking.
