Service Referring developed with AI-driven low-code platform OutSystems

VECOZO, in collaboration with HSO, has developed a new service on the low-code platform OutSystems: Referral.

The service is the result of three years of intensive collaboration. In the interview below, André Beerendonk and Maaike Caron from VECOZO share insights about the new service and their partnership with HSO.

Last week, it was announced that VECOZO, an organization facilitating secure communication between parties in healthcare, has made the new service Referral available nationwide. The service provides an alternative solution for digital referrals across the entire healthcare chain, from referrers and follow-up care providers to patients.

Until recently, the healthcare sector relied on a single provider to facilitate message traffic between referrers, such as general practitioners, and care providers. “We received signals from various industry organizations indicating a need for an alternative that could offer a better user experience while also being more cost-effective,” says Maaike Caron, Manager Operations at VECOZO.

Regional Testing and Optimization
Regional tests have already shown that the Referral service accelerates the referral process for general practitioners, saving valuable time. Time that GPs can then dedicate to patient care. Additionally, the service is a cost-effective alternative for hospitals and other healthcare providers that pay per referral.

The regional tests involved hospitals, independent clinics, and general practitioner organizations, among others. The results of these tests formed the basis for further optimizations, such as a standardized catalog of products and services. This allows GPs to locate care options more quickly.

Developing with low-code also means that components can be easily reused. Together with HSO, we have already developed a new procurement portal and a negotiation module using this approach.

AI-Driven Development Platform

Originally, the company used the .NET platform for the development and maintenance of applications. However, this platform proved to be less than ideal for the development of the Referral service. Not only did it make the development process cumbersome and time-consuming, but it was also too expensive. As a result, the company started exploring alternative development methods. It was crucial to find a platform and provider that met the requirements for security, reliability, and availability—non-negotiable criteria, especially given the sensitive healthcare data involved.

The solution was ultimately found in the AI-driven low-code platform from OutSystems. This platform is particularly well-suited for developing complex, business-critical applications. “What’s appealing about developing with low-code is that you can quickly present something to stakeholders and validate whether it meets their expectations,” says Maaike.

Umbrella Organizations and General Practitioners

The development of the Referral service involved close collaboration with HSO (a partner of OutSystems), umbrella organizations, and general practitioners. “Part of the development process included testing the application in various regions, involving hospitals, independent clinics, and GP organizations. Based on these tests, further optimizations were implemented,” says Maaike.

André Beerendonk, IT Manager at VECOZO, adds: “We’ve achieved a lot and learned a great deal along the way. It took courage to move away from our .NET standard and adopt a new development method for this application. Developing with low-code also allows for easy reuse of components. Together with HSO, we have already developed a new procurement portal and a negotiation module. Additionally, we are now exploring how the OutSystems platform can help reduce our technical debt and replace legacy applications. As a result, the platform has secured a much more integral position within our architecture landscape.”
