What is Microsoft Fabric?

30 Oct, 2024

AI is turning the world upside down, changing how we live, work and communicate. By structurally implementing AI in your company, you will increase productivity and reduce costs. Yet many organizations experience a threshold to start their AI journey. Often they lack the right expertise in AI and data analysis and access to qualitative data, which are essential for effective AI modeling. Microsoft Fabric and HSO with the DNA framework significantly lower these thresholds.

What is Microsoft Fabric?

Microsoft Fabric was launched in early 2024 and is an integrated platform for data analytics and business intelligence that enables seamless communication between data and people within organizations. It combines all the necessary tools and services in a single environment. It provides a complete security package, as a Software as a Service (SaaS) platform, and includes built-in security and reliability features to secure data at rest and in transit. The platform uses Microsoft Entra ID for authentication, and encrypts all interactions by default. Using AI/ML models, data is analyzed and translated into high-quality analytics. This allows you to substantiate strategic decisions with data.

It also supports compliance with a wide range of standards, and offers governance tools like data lineage and information protection labels. Data loss prevention (DLP) is also integrated into the platform, ensuring that data is managed and used responsibly.

Main components of Microsoft Fabric

  1. Data Lakehouses: These combine the features of data lakes and data warehouses, allowing for both structured and unstructured data storage and processing.
  2. Data Warehousing: This component provides high-performance SQL capabilities and can scale independently, storing data in an open format.
  3. Data Transformation: Tools like Azure Data Factory are used for robust ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes, enabling data integration from various sources.
  4. Machine Learning: This includes capabilities for building, deploying, and operationalizing machine learning models, integrating with Azure Machine Learning for experiment tracking and model management.
  5. Data Governance: Azure Purview is used for data governance and lineage, ensuring data is managed and used responsibly across the organization.

Fabric in practice

By monitoring data from multiple data sources in real time, Fabric transforms complex data streams into valuable insights. But what are concrete examples of the applicability of Fabric?

Take a clothing store: AI/ML models combine streams of data to gain insight into inventory and sales figures. This data is converted into advice, for example; to keep popular items in stock and to discount less popular items in time. Analysis of historical sales data and market developments then help to identify trends in customer behavior. This can then be used for targeted marketing campaigns, and ultimately higher customer satisfaction.

Or a packaging manufacturer: with help from Fabric, it builds targeted AI models to predict machine maintenance based on multiple data streams, such as wear statistics, historical maintenance data, and machine running time. This preventative maintenance reduces unexpected failures and costly repairs. It prevents potential problems from occurring, keeping downtime to a minimum.

Communications with Fabric

Fabric optimizes internal and external communications within your organization by feeding AI models with relevant sources such as customer and product data.

Customer questions about products and services are now handled fast by custom AI applications, which reduces waiting times and keeps customers coming back. HR processes such as vacation requests and staff planning are automated, so employees have more time for the creative side of their work. The result? More job and customer satisfaction.

Microsoft Fabric Jumpstart

To start your journey with Microsoft Fabric, we offer the Fabric Jumpstart.

The Jumpstart is a four-day workshop  in which we will co-develop and design your first data and analytics workload with Microsoft Fabric. At the end of the workshop, you will have a clear picture of how Microsoft Fabric can help your organization, and you will have an action plan for implementing Fabric.
