NTT Achieves Global Cloud Transformation with Azure

NTT partnered with Microsoft and utilised the Azure cloud platform to create a blueprint for their digital transformation.

NTT is a global leader in IT infrastructure and services, providing expertise in networks, security, managed services, and more to over 75% of the top 100 companies on the Fortune Global 500 list. NTT manages a complex digital environment with over 25,000 servers and 2,200 applications across more than 50 data centres.

“Azure helps us consolidate through decommissioning applications and workloads by up to a third. In a central operating model, we no longer need decentralised support, helping us achieve an operational cost reduction of roughly 30%.”

Pascal Weiss Regional Chief Information Officer, NTT

Embracing a Cloud-First Strategy

NTT’s cloud-first strategy is pivotal for the company’s continued growth. The digital complexity within NTT previously led to inefficient resource allocation and challenges in governance and financial control. To address this, NTT partnered with Microsoft and utilized the Azure cloud platform to create a blueprint for their digital transformation.

Building a Template for Global Transformation

The project team from NTT and Microsoft focused on designing a standardised Azure-based platform. The transformation began with a test case in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, specifically in the on-premises Singapore data centre. The process involved reviewing and decommissioning approximately 25% of existing workloads and migrating the remaining Windows and Linux virtual machines and servers to Azure and most VMware workloads moved to Azure VMware Solution. This transformation resulted in monthly savings of over $100,000 and an estimated three-year total cost of ownership savings of $1 million.

“We’re now ready to accelerate based on our experience over the last few months, leveraging our new playbook.” - Pascal Weiss, Regional Chief Information Officer, NTT

Enhancing Security, Business Continuity, and Disaster Recovery

A central goal of NTT’s transformation is to modernise and unify security. Azure facilitates an improved security posture through secure design and Zero Trust principles, helping NTT adopt new cloud security solutions quickly and maintain more than 60 certifications in the APAC region.

“Security as it relates to governance, certifications, and data sovereignty is a major challenge. In APAC alone, we have more than 60 certifications that we need to maintain in our jurisdictions. Azure helps us cater and accommodate for those constraints in every cloud migration.” - Richard Banfield, IT Information Systems Director, NTT

NTT also benefits from consolidated processes, simplified global security, and enhanced business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) capabilities. Using Azure Backup and Azure Site Recovery, NTT has improved functionality and reduced costs, making BCDR quicker and more flexible.

A Unified Cloud Future

With the Azure migration, NTT can do more with less. Shifting to Azure reduces time to market for services, speeds up client onboarding, and increases revenue faster.

“By shifting to Azure, we’re reducing time to market for our services business. We can onboard the client and see that revenue faster.” - Pascal Weiss, Regional Chief Information Officer, NTT

NTT also leverages Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Power Platform on Azure, enhancing team capabilities and providing a common data pool for analytics. The overall migration to Azure offers significant savings and optimization opportunities, with expectations to generate $5 million in savings and reduce IT operational costs by 30%.

“Our migration to the Azure cloud platform is a powerful opportunity to transform our organization, making NTT more satisfying for employees, easier for clients, and more valuable for shareholders.”
